Founding and initial popularity
MassTek Industries was founded by Reggae Desantis on March 27th 3395, only 2 days after the the UN took control of the Sol system. Reggae was always very interested in extraterrestrial life and their culture, when he learned form commonwealth soldiers how large corporations operate in the Commonwealth, he decided to found his corporation based on these values of the preservation and respect of intelligent beings.
MassTek Industries is from time of founding always a workers coop, this means that all personnel has a voice in the day to day operations of the corporation. While this had some growing pains, It quickly became one of the most popular ventures to work for.
Just 6 months after it's founding, the corporation hit 1 Billion dollars (about 355 million commonwealth tokens) in revenue. In 3405 MassTek Industries developed it's first starship, The dolphin class Explorer. It was a moderate success with private explorer outfits, stating it's reliability.
Rise to power
While the Dolphin was a good start, MassTek leadership noticed a hole in the star ship market for affordable hauling craft. So in 3750 They started development on a new spaceframe. Around the turn of this millennium, around 4000 GST the Tortoise class was announced for civilian markets. Because of the announced price, which was very low for a hauler of the tortoise's size pre orders sold out in a single day. The tortoise class released in 4007 and was first delivered to pre order holders.
Unlike the Dolphin, the Tortoise was a smash hit with small and large hauling ventures alike. COMNN (Commonwealth News Network) requested to make a documentary of the corporation in 4010, which MassTek immediately accepted. The documentary named 'MassTek, behind the scenes of the tortoise' was not a success story of the corporation, but a celebration of her staff that made it possible. This was an incredibly fresh look for a corporations at the time, as executives still liked to take credit for the actions of others. This humility sat well with the general population.
Shortly after, MassTek released the Hermit class miner, MassTek's first capital ship, developed at their Martian shipyards. Like the Turtoise, it blew up in popularity. Mostly due to their laser mining tech that rivalled the best in the branch in extraction efficiency. Around this time in 4203, MassTek Industries was finally granted Mecorporation status by the Terran Commonwealth, opening their business to new opportunties. It took MassTek about 808 years to get this status, longer than most megacorporations in the commonwealth.
Relations with the Commonwealth
After seeing the success of the hermit class, the Commonwealth Admiralty decided to contract MassTek Industries to develop a beam weapon based on the mining lasers on the hermit class in 4207. While MassTek accepted, they recruited help of Koening Armistice, a well known weapons manufacturer, to develop this weapon as they did not have the knowledge about weapons. MassTek's knowledge about laser technologies and Koening's weapons manufacturing skills combined, created a extremely efficient weapon in 4222. They call it the OSIRIS weapon system. MassTek developed a ship to test this weapon until it got approval from BlueCorp Technologies, the largest military supplier, for a joined test venture. The Osiris class was born for the initial tests of the weapon, the osiris weapon was enormous at the time, so it functioned as a spinal weapon.
The military was incredibly impressed by the destructive power of the weapon system and put in a order for 400 [[Osiris class ships]], but requested that they are armored to navy standards. The full order was completed on July 15th 4329, the payment of this order allowed MassTek Industries to build 3 more shipyards in multiple systems, as outsourcing repair work was no longer efficient.
Modernisation of ship systems
Around the mid 4000's MassTek produced 300 iterations of the Dolphin, 150 iterations of the Turtoise and 50 iterations of the Osiris. Due to a deal with BlueCorp, OSIRIS weapons are now an option on BlueCorp's military ships. The OSIRIS weapon was also downscaled with multiple new models that can be mounted on turrets.
The Temperance Incident
Around the year 4530, MassTek Industries started experimenting with Interdimensional travel. In the commonwealth this is incredibly illegal as it has lead to catastrophic loss in life numerous times. On December 1st 4532, the Terran Commonwealth senate gave a warning to MassTek Industries to seize experimentation immediately.
MassTek, ignored these warnings from the government and industry peers and sent out an experimental ship on a manned expedition. Travel to the rendezvous went well. The moment the ship tried to make the jump to a different reality, it suffered a critical reality failure, causing the ship and her 300 man crew compliment to explode across the multiverse. Only 5 crew members managed to make contact with MassTek through unknown means. All other 295 souls are still MIA.
Known realities post Temperance Incident
- A blocky reality where one crew member started a large food production firm.
- A reality where a crew member joined a company that specializes in industrializing other worlds to save Earth
- A Primitive version of the milky way, contact was received from a ship identified as MTIS Discovery
- A reality where the crew member helped design containment for the unexplainable
- [REDACTED], the crew member died shortly after contacting MassTek
Aftermath
Next to the crew members of this ship being tossed into different realities, The Commonwealth held a tribunal to punish the people involved. All project leads were sentenced to life imprisonment for reckless endangerment and breaking Interdimensional travel laws. The corporation was fined 550 trillion tokens for damages.
